Place your celeriac “fillets” into a small oven tray pour over the marinade ensuring the fillets are coated.

There should be a little excess marinade in the bottom of the tray. This will be absorbed, and it will also help the celeriac to steam as it heats up. After 45 minutes remove the foil turn over the fillets and spoon any remaining marinade over the top. Return the tray to the oven uncovered for another 10 minutes or so to cook through and absorb the remaining juices.

While the celeriac is in the oven baking, make the ragout. Bring a little oil to a shimmer in a saucepan and add the leeks along with the minced garlic and bay. Add the wine and the stock and simmer gently for a few minutes until the leek is tender and the alcohol has cooked off the wine. Add the cooked beans. In a blender puree the silken tofu, lemon, mustard, pesto and spices. Stir this into the leek mixture and bring it to a gentle simmer.

For the salsa combine all the ingredients. Serve the ragout in a bowl topped with a fillet, a dollop of soy yogurt and a sprinkling of salsa.

However, if suffering from depression we always recommend you seek medical advice.

Practising yoga may delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease. Yoga combined with meditation can delay cognitive impairment, typically the first indicator of the development of Alzheimer’s disease.

In Oregon USA, people practice Goat yoga. They let goats climb on them while they try and do yoga poses. Yes, we think it is ridiculous too!

Ancient Yogis believed that we each have a finite number of breaths. Patanjali mentions the ability to sit for extended periods as one of the eight limbs of yoga.

In Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, Asana, or postural practice (which is mostly what we focus on in class) is just one of 8 of the limbs of yoga practice!

What are the 8 limbs of yoga?

Yama (Restraints)

Niyama (Observances)

Asana (Posture)

Pranayama (Breath Control)

Pratyahara (Sensory Withdrawal)

Dharana (Concentration)

Dhyana (Meditation)

Samadhi (Pure Blissful Awareness)

The first limb of yoga is the Yamas. The Yamas are five ethical observances. The first Yama is Ahimsa: Non-Violence. This includes violence in action, but also in thought and word. We aim to reduce violence in both our outer and inner worlds.

The second Yama is Satya: Truth. In Sanskrit “sat” means true nature or essence, and “ya” means to do, to live by or in. So to observe Satya is to reside in our true essence.

The third Yama is Asteya: Non-stealing. This Yama refers to taking what is not ours, taking more than we need, or even stealing from ourselves by neglecting our own needs.

The fourth Yama is Brahmacharya: Moderation, restraint, or control of energy. This Yama refers to channelling our energy and desire into meaningful pursuits. Actually in Sanskrit “Brahma” means god, “char” means to walk and “ya” means to do, to live by or in. In our secular era the direct translation is hard to resonate with, but we must remember when the sutras were written, all roads led to god.

The fifth Yama is Aparigraha: Non-Attachment and Greedlessness. We aim to control our desire for more stuff, and be happy with what we have. Good life advice!

The second limb of yoga is the Niyamas. The Niyamas are five personal observances. The first Yama is Saucha: Purity and cleanliness. In yoga we aim to keep both body and mind pure, so good hygiene, good diet, etc lead to clarity of mind.

The second Niyama is Santosha: Contentment or acceptance. It means appreciating what we have and finding joy in our lives as they are, rather than craving more.

The third Niyama is TAPAS: Fire, passion, austerity, discipline! Through fiery yoga practice we burn off the dross, and let our greatness glow!

The fourth Niyama is Svadhyaya: Self-Study. It is useful to always adopt the attitude of student, and study the practice and subject of yoga, and also the self.

The fifth and final Niyama is Isvara Pranidhana: Surrender to a higher power. Life often runs out of our control, and sometimes the best action is to let go and trust. Isvara Pranidhana is nicely summed up by the Irish expression: “God willing”!

The third limb of yoga is the Asana. Asana is posture practice, the poses you are familiar with in yoga class. Patanjali defines Asana as “Steady and Comfortable”. Do you find yoga poses steady and comfortable? Perhaps the Asana challenge is to find increasingly difficult poses steady and comfortable…

The fourth limb of yoga is the Pranayama. Pranayama is breath-work. The direct translation from Sanskrit is more poetic. “Prana” means subtle life force, and “ayama” means extension. Ancient yogis thought that practicing Pranayama would extend your life!

The fifth limb of yoga is the Pratyahara. Pranayama is withdrawal of the senses. We do this at the end of every practice: In savasana we quieten the sense organs, and bring awareness inside the body, and usually to the constant of the breath.

The sixth limb of yoga is the Dharana. Dharana translates as “holding steady”, “concentration” or “single focus”. Through regular practice of the previous five limbs of yoga, concentration develops and the practitioner can hold their focus on a single point (usually the breath or an area of the body).

The seventh limb of yoga is the Dhyana. Dhyana is Meditation. Whats the difference between Dharana (concentration) and Dhyana (meditation)? Concentration is the process and the effort, and meditation is the state of unbroken concentration which comes with the effort.

The eighth and final limb of yoga is Samadhi. Translating from Sanskrit, “sama” means equanimous, and “dhi” means consciousness. So through practicing all of the other 7 limbs of yoga, you reach a state of calm, composed, blissful awareness.

Osteoarthritis in is a debilitating condition is where the cartilage inside a joint wears down or becomes damaged with time, or through injury. Shoulder Osteoarthritis usually occurs in the Glenohumeral Joint 1. Lets explore the anatomy of the shoulder joints, with reference to arthritis.

What is cartilage?

Cartilage is a strong and smooth type of tissue, with a firm rubbery consistency. It is made up of approximately 70% water and a 30% matrix of collagen and proteins. With age and wear the water content in cartilage declines, leaving it more vulnerable to damage and injury.

What is a joint?

A joint is the place here two (or more) bones connect and usually articulate or move. There are different types of joints, but most mobile joints are called synovial joints. This is because the joint is encased in a synovial capsule or sac, filled with synovial fluid. The ends of the bones inside the synovial joint are usually covered with hyaline cartilage. This particular cartilage has a very low level of friction so that the two bone ends slide on or over each other without any irritation. As mentioned above, with age, injury and wear and tear, this cartilage can wear away, tear, or become frayed or scuffed. Without this smooth cartilaginous buffer, bone and rub against each other causing pain and inflammation.

What is synovial fluid?

Synovial fluid has been compared to an egg white in appearance and consistency. It acts as a lubricant inside the joint capsule to reduce friction. By filling the synovial capsule it aids in shock absorption, and it also helps to distribute nutrients to the joint cartridge. A curious fact, synovial fluid is classed as non-Newtonian. Its viscosity increases under pressure. This action may help with the aforementioned shock absorption.

Shoulder Arthritis (Shoulder Osteoarthritis)

Diagnosis and Symptoms of Shoulder Arthritis
The main symptom of shoulder arthritis is pain. The condition is irritated by activity. Range of motion will most likely be reduced, possibly with a feeling of grinding inside the joint. Movement may create popping or clicking sounds. Please note, popping sounds are not unusual in joints, and do not necessarily mean arthritis. Pain is the symptom to look out for.

Pain often increases at night. This is due to the lack of mobility and to the simple fact that you may for a long period be lying on the shoulder, pushing weight into the injured area.

Affected areas of the Shoulder

There are two joints where are you may experience shoulder arthritis.

The first is the joint between the clavicle and the acromion. The clavicle is your collarbone. The acromion is a finger like protrusion at the front of the scapula or shoulder blade. Together they form the acromio-clavicular joint. Arthritis in this area would be felt as pain and irritation in the front shoulder.

The second is where the humeral head connects with the glenoid fossa. The humeral head is the ball at the end of your humorous, or upper arm bone. The glenoid fossa is the socket which your upper arm bone plugs into. This form is one of the two ball and socket joints in the body, the other being your hip. This area is the most common area to develop shoulder arthritis, and is the one which we will discuss.

Conventional Shoulder Arthritis Treatment Options

On diagnosis your doctor may recommend firstly rest to allow irritation to recede. Then medication , physical therapy, and possibly steroid injections are all non-surgical options. Inflammation is always present with arthritis, and if you have arthritis or any inflammation it is worth looking at your diet, habits and lifestyle. You may find ways to reduce inflammation in your body through making lifestyle changes.

If non-surgical treatments do not reduce pain sufficiently your doctor may refer you on for surgery. Within surgery there are a few options:

Shoulder Arthroscopy

Shoulder arthroscopy is classed as key hole surgery. The surgeon inserts a small camera through hey small incision to examine inside the shoulder and joint capsule. The surgeon is looking to see what is causing the pain. It could be adhesions, see episode four about frozen shoulder for more information. It could be torn cartilage. The cartilage could be frayed and folding back on itself, or a floating piece of cartilage could be getting jammed in between the two bone surfaces. This can be trimmed back and smoothed out.

Shoulder Arthroplasty

Shoulder arthroplasty is what we refer to as shoulder replacement. There is a wealth of variety in shoulder replacement surgery, depending on what level of arthritic damage is present. It might simply be that the head of the humerus and the glenoid fossa are resurfaced. At the other end of the scale the whole of the ball of the humerus and the glenoid fossa and accompanying bone may be removed, and replaced with a titanium prosthesis .

Can yoga help with Shoulder Arthritis:

Much of yoga is weight-bearing, which is going to compress a joint. This is beneficial for healthy joints, as a controlled level of weight-bearing will build bone density and maintain cartilage shock absorption. However such yoga poses may need to be avoided or modified when dealing with arthritis. It is important to remember that extreme mobility exercises may also irritate arthritis, so I recommend keeping all movements within a realistic and achievable level of flexibility.

1. Tadasana Variations

Tadasana is a wonderful diagnostic pose. Because in shoulder terms it is not weight bearing, and because the spine is in a neutral position, it allows us to play with shoulder mobility, and explore where pain begins in various arm positions.

a. I recommend exploring arms out to the sides, reaching out like in Virabhadrasana 2, and exploring internal and external rotation (palms down, palms up). If your arms feel too heavy, you can bring your fingertips onto your shoulders, which effectively makes the arms lighter.

You can try the arm variations described below, using a brick or belt, as these props help to create space inside the glenohumeral joint of the shoulder.

Straighten the arms, and extend the hands forward and upward. As the arms rise you will get to a stiff point, where you will want to poke out the chest and sway the back. Resist, take the lower front ribs in, and keep the abdomen engaged. Also lift the armpits, draw the elbows in and spread the shoulder blades.

2. The Pendulum
This a wonderful way to release pressure in the shoulder. Bend over a chair, and put your knee and hand on the seat of the chair. Let the arm of your arthritic shoulder hang, and allow the weight to create space in the shoulder socket. You can then let your arm swing gently, which will decompress the joint.

3. The Swing
In Tadasana hold a a stick or broom handle behind you, and swing it from side to side. This will gently limber up the shoulders without strain. You can play with an overhand or underhand grip, and how wide you place your hands also. I recommend having the feet apart for this one. It will help you to stay rooted as you mobilise the shoulders.

Remember, taking the arms above shoulder height may be painful. Remember: try taking the arms behind the back before taking them forward, as this will help with mobility.

You can then do the same action with the stick or broom handle in front of you, and explore your range of mobility by swinging it from side to side in front of you.

4. Trikonasana, Virabhadrasana 2
Standing poses which put no weight into the shoulders or arms are really useful when managing shoulder arthritis. Both Utthita Trikonasana and Virabhadrasana 2 are primarily leg and pelvic poses, but they also have great potential as a gentle shoulder mobilising and strengthening pose. You may find that you cannot hold your arms at shoulder height, so you can just release them onto the hips. Once you feel that you are strong enough to go a little further, why don’t you try doing the pose with a stick or broom handle?

In Utthita Trikonasana vertical arms may be too challenging due to shoulder pain, but you can use your strong shoulder to support your immobile shoulder using a staff or stick.

As you hold the poses, feel the shoulder blades spread and reach out into the fingertips, to create space in the glenohumeral joints.

I recommend playing with the shoulders in the pose. If you can take the arms out to the sides, explore how the shoulders feel as you externally rotate the upper arms. Try turning the palms upward. Compare how the shoulders feel when you broaden the shoulder blades vs. the collarbones. Get to know your comfortable range of motion in the pose!

You can also explore the range of comfortable motion in your shoulders in any other standing poses, as they bear no shoulder weight.

5. Bharmanasana
Bharmanasana is commonly known as tabletop pose. It can gently strengthen the arms and shoulders, without irritating shoulder arthritis. Try grounding into the finger bases, particularly the index fingers (as they tend to lift). then push the floor away, and grip into the upper arms. As you push the floor away let your shoulder blades spread. Once again try to bring space into the shoulders by lifting out of the hands, rather than sinking down into the hands (and shoulders).

6. Bharmanasana into Adhomukha Virsasana
From Bharmanasana you can sit back onto your heels into Adhomukha Virasana, keeping the hands on the floor in front of you. feel the armpits open and the shoulders stretch out. The more you can sit back the more you will create space in the glenohumeral joints.

7. Ardha Adhomukha Svanasana
If you can do all of the above poses without pain, you could think of bringing Dog back into your yoga practice. Adhomukha Svanasana is a weight bearing pose, so if you are rehabilitating a dislocated shoulder or working to stabilise shoulder instability, I recommend doing Adhomukha Svanasana with your hands on a height. It can be the seat of a chair, or the wall. If you know Samadhi yoga studios, the upstairs window ledges are perfect for this. Having the hands on a height takes much of the weight out of the shoulders, allowing you to control the amount of effort and stretch, and to focus more directly on spreading and drawing down the scapulae, and drawing the humeral heads into the glenohumeral sockets.

Hi, Greg here.

Can you believe it?

Samadhi opened on 1st November 2005. I know we are in a lockdown right now, but come on… a birthday is a birthday!

I wonder, can you help me to celebrate 15 years of samadhi yoga studios. Have you a memory, or a photo? Would you share it in the comments below?

Now:

Would you like to hear a very short version of the story of Samadhi? Let me see what I can remember…

On the 1st of November 2005 I opened Samadhi. Before Samadhi I had run a studio called Prana Yoga Centre, for nearly 3 years. Prana was beside the Stags Head bar, a big venue on two floors. Prana was ambitious, it was Dublin City’s first yoga studio, but it was more than Dublin was ready for in 2003. Two of us opened it, and pretty quickly I realised that a yoga business would struggle to support two households. In fact it might struggle to even support itself. Looking back I can see now exactly where we went wrong. We agreed to an outrageously high rent, I think the landlords saw us coming. We hosted large events which were often loss leaders. We paid teachers really well, often more than they brought in. In the few years I co-ran Prana I dug myself deep into debt. But I really struggled to let it go. I loved running Prana, I felt that I could make it work, I just needed to work a little harder, teach a few more classes, promote more. I felt that if Prana failed then I also failed. Its a classic scenario isn’t it? Mistakenly equating what we do with who we are?

Eventually I met my good friend, accountant and financial wizard Yitsun, for advice. I showed him the figures and asked him: Has my ship sunk?

Yitsun’s answer has always stayed with me:

“Oh Greg! Your ship HAS sunk. In sinking it has broken to pieces. These pieces are all scattered over the deep sea floor. Your crew? They have all drowned. And their bodies have been entirely eaten by fishes.”

That day I put the wheels in motion to close Prana.

Later on the same day, I met another good friend, Judith, another accountant and financial wizard. I possibly had my head in my hands. I told her of Yitsun’s prognosis. She smiled and said that she had been trying to tell me the same for months. I asked her what I could do. She said I should do it again, but with eyes fully open this time. I said I had nothing, in fact I owed €40,000, and starting a new business cost money. Judith said that I had the students, I had the expertise now, I just needed a venue. I said again that it all cost money, and to say I had none was an understatement.

Judith said:

“How much do you really need? A month or two of rent? Some money for fit out? I will give it to you, give it back whenever you have it.”

I have always been lucky to be surrounded by wise and generous friends, and I am forever grateful.

Neil, my designer friend, designed all of the Samadhi graphics as a favour. I remember meeting him mid-morning in a cafe to discuss design of the branding. Having looked at my fruit bowl while I ate breakfast, I brought in a nectarine as my design inspiration. You will notice the Samadhi colours are pink and orange, now you know where they came from!

As regards naming the studio, I probably should have called it something simple like Dublin yoga studio, but I must admit, search engine optimisation was not on my mind. I love the sound and feel of Sanskrit, and I thought that Samadhi was a wonderful aspirational name.Getting decent google ranking has been a constant source of consternation ever since!

I searched all over the city centre to find a small and affordable space for yoga. I wanted somewhere affordable, so that I could focus on teaching good yoga rather than worrying about paying the rent. I found a great space, and was let down, found another space and was refused, found a beautiful third space beside Stephens Green, and was gazumped. Eventually I found a tricky venue on upper Baggot Street, on the top floor, up a lot of stairs! It would fit just 8 yogis, but it was a beginning. It was too far out, but I rented it for two months to get Samadhi started from Halloween to Christmas of 2005. It was just me and a couple of other teachers. I was doing everything, from teaching the classes to answering the phone, taking all bookings, building the website, mopping the floor is, handing out flyers, sticking up posters. I did not mind for one second, it was fresh and exciting, but was really quite all consuming.

One night I was persuaded to take the evening off, which felt so decadent to me. I went to a gig, I remember it, it was Gavin Bryars with Gavin Friday and the Crash Ensemble. I got my classes covered for the evening by a great teacher friend of mine. I met them in reception, and got them set up. The reception was a separate room which we had to lock while classes were on, so I gave them keys to open reception after class, and to let them selves out and lock up. The teacher forgot to take the keys, instead left them reception, which I locked up. I was at the gig, with my phone turned off. When I turned it back during the interval on I received a torrent of texts and missed calls. When the class ended the teacher realised that they were all locked out of reception, and aside from not being able to get their shoes and valuables, without keys they were locked into the building! They tried to the get the attention of passers-by on Baggot Street to no avail. Instead of waiting for my gig to end, they decided to take extreme action.

The final message I got was:

“All is ok, we just kicked the door in and got our stuff. All’s well that ends well!”

Well, I could not enjoy the end of the gig as you can imagine, so I left and went back to Samadhi, to see our 150 year old victorian reception door in pieces. What did I do? I glued it back together, and said nothing!

While we were in that space I kept looking, and eventually found a room on North Lotts just beside the halfpenny bridge. It could take 12 yogis, it was no-frills, but perfect for our needs.

Samadhi stayed on North Lotts for almost 2 years. We had such good times. It was just me and a couple of other teachers and the classes were for the most part booked out. It had bars on the windows and had just one toilet as a dressing area. But it was warm and cosy, and it had a ledge at hip height all around the walls so we could do great leg stretches! I had closed Prana thousands, and it allowed me the space to pay back a lot of those debts.

There were two pubs opposite us on North Lotts. And I am sure that they had us sussed. Why? Because they always did their bottle recycling right when we lay down for Savasana. TWICE A NIGHT! Yes, we had 2 classes most evenings, and they would manage to soundtrack our Savasana with smashing class for each class!

After the summer of 2007, I decided it was time to look for somewhere a little larger, and a little bit snazzier. My friend Cathy Pearson and come across a quickie location at the far end of Temple Bar, chucked away in a lovely green courtyard. It had been a crash for seven years, but that business had wound up and it was sitting idle. I must admit when I went in to see it, I was a little disappointed. I had hoped it would be bigger. It really was not much bigger in floorplan to North Lotts, but it had space around the studio. It had two toilets. It even had a kitchen. Southside glamour! It was a two story building, there was no way I could afford the whole building, so I connected with a media company who took the ground floor, and Samadhi moved into the first floor. Some of you long timers will remember this. Where we now store props used to be a little room with a glass wall. That was actually reception for our first two years! But I get ahead of myself. Before we could move in the premises needed a lot of work. It has been empty for a while and felt quite rundown, and as a creche it had some child friendly features which needed to be changed. The toilets for example, they were all tiny, designed for five-year-olds legs! All of the windows had wooden bars on them, so that the little people would not fall out. What is now our reception was originally the baby room, and our cloakroom was the nappy changing area. The downstairs yoga studio was the toddler room, and the upstairs studio was for older children!

We settled into our new space nicely. We could take 16 yogis at a squeeze, and usually ran two classes per evening back to back. We ran workshops and lovely events, revelling in our newfound swankiness. At this time I was also doing a lot of Iyengar yoga training, I did my intermediate junior levels 1&2. I was pushing myself really hard, and I remember one day walking by Pen Corner off Dame Street, and my knee gave way. The short version of a long story was I tore my knee meniscus, and ended up having surgery. Recovery was long, and I remember having to teach sitting down for 2 months. The Samadhi students are a really caring and patient bunch, and did not complain.

In 2008 the economic crash crept over Dublin line a slow dark cloud. At first we felt that people recognised that yoga was essential for their health, but the truth of it was that the crash took its time sinking its teeth into the Irish yoga scene. I remember having some meetings with other studio owners. We tried to set up an association, I would say in 2008. The meetings could have been really fruitful, I had thought that we might be able to get preferential insurance rates as a group etc. But it ended up being more of a talking shop, discussing the best kind of meditation cushions etc. A year later many of those studios were closed.

the media company needed to move out of our building, and so I decided to take over the two floors. We had many full classes in our one room, so it seemed like a logical expansion. I must admit looking back that one larger room would have been better than two rooms, but I did not want to leave our cozy space, so we doubled our timetable, took on more teachers, more classes, more variety.

Around this time I was living in Drogheda, and a friend up there had Drogheda’s only yoga studio. After a few years she wanted to leave the town, and asked me if I would take it over. So in June 2007 Samadhi Drogheda was born!

To be continued…
